suicide is the second leading cause of the death worldwide, due to depression and other psychosocial issues of life people are aware about their mental state and due to inappropriate knowledge and lack of orientation and awareness, in every 40second one individual commit suicide. As per the latest report of 2014 it was as low as "one in 100,000 people". The average suicide rate in India is 10.9 for every lakh people and majority of people who commit suicide are below 44 years of age.
Considering all the above factors Indian Association of Youth Psychologists (youth forum) took this initiative to prevent suicide across the country under its wing of SUICIDE PREVENTION GANG, which provide free counselling services. And to promote suicide prevention in India, IAYP Celebrated world mental health day 2019 by conducting a seminaron suicide prevention in collaboration with Manas Rog Division,Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU.
The purpose of organising this event was to promote mental health in india, because everyone is running sort of time during their busy schedule, people are working day and night and manage their life but they are not able to make time for their mental health, and this is the only reason whenever they feel any type of issues related with mental health, they can’t share because they are not aware about their actually problem and consequences too. So the purpose behind this program was to promote mental health, to spread awareness about mental health issues, and last but not the least to reduce the consequences.
It was one day seminar and over two hundred people joined that initiative, the program was started with worshiping lord Dhanwantari and “MAHAMANA” Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Ji and followed by Kulgeet and welcoming the chief guest.
In the series of inaugural ceremony plantation done by the chief guest And with the blessings of Lord dhanwantari, MAHAMANA pandit madan mohan malviya ji and our most respected professors the sessions were started.
Session started with the topic “influence of society on suicide” by Dr. Sanjay Gupta sir, professor and former head, department of psychiatry, institute of medical sciences, Banaras Hindu University. In which different aspects of society and societal norms, and different cultural values were explained and discussed with participants whom affect mental health and to the some extend that are responsible for mental illness and leads suicide.
In this series the second session was taken by Dr. J.S.Tripathi sir, professor, and former head, department of kayachitiksa, faculty of ayurveda, institute of medical sciences, banaras hindu university, on the topic “Etiological consideration of suicide”. In this session various types of etiological factors were nicely explained by speaker, he explained all the etiological factors right from biological, psychological, social, emotional, behavioural etc. He also explained the incident and prevalence of mental health and suicide and also discuss one to one with participants about cases and other factors.
Legal aspects is one of the most important thing about which we need to be aware but unfortunately, if we pay attention we will found out that in today’s era where people are reached to the moon but not aware about their mood. Even today there are lots of myths and stigmas are spread among the people especially about people with mental health issues. So, clear all the myths and steps taken by Indian government in the field of mental health our third session was conducted on the topic “law and suicide” which was taken by professor N.K. Mishra sir, assistant professor, faculty of law, Banaras Hindu University. During session all the myths are cleared by sir and he explained all the necessary laws related to mental health and also aware with the legal actions we can take against the individual who takes suicidal steps and for those also who provoke to commit suicide.
Last but not the least the intervention part in which mental health professional or non professional both can play an active role to help someone who has depression or any sort of mental health issues and prevent suicide. These things are discussed under the topic of “USE of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in suicide prevention, covered by Mr. Laxman yadav, counselling psychologist. He has discussed all the possible techniques which we can use and help someone and also gives a clue to figure out the warning signs, which may work as alarm so that individual can seek help from any mental health expert or support the person who is already having mental health issues.
With this sessions were ended up, all the sessions were very informative, and interactive, participants learnt lots of thing about mental health and related it issues. Program ended up with the certificate distribution and vote of thanks.
